Kingdom (present address) – 2 – ABSTRACT Using an Eulerian perturbative calculation, we show that the distribution of relative pairwise velocities which arises from gravitational instability of Gaussian density fluctuations has asymmetric (skewed) exponential tails. The negative skewness is induced by the negative mean streaming velocity of pairs (the infall prevails over expansion), while the exponential tails arise because the relative pairwise velocity is a number, not volume weighted statistic. The derived probability distribution is compared with N-body simulations and shown to provide a reasonable fit. Subject headings: large-scale structure of universe — galaxies: interactions – 3 –

Skewed, exponential pressure distributions from Gaussian velocities
A simple analytical argument is given to show that the distribution function of the pressure and that of its gradient have exponential tails when the velocity is Gaussian. A calculation of moments implies a negative skewness for the pressure. Explicit analytical results are given for the case of the velocity being restricted to a shell in wave number. Numerical pressure distributions are presen...
متن کاملThe distribution of pairwise peculiar velocities in thenon - linear
The distribution of pairwise relative peculiar velocities, f(u;r), on small non-linear scales, r, is derived from the Press{Schechter approach. This derivation assumes that Press{Schechter clumps are virialized and isothermal. The virialized assumption requires that the circular velocity V c / M 1=3 , where M denotes the mass of the clump. The isothermal assumption means that the circular veloc...

The distribution of pairwise, relative peculiar velocities, f(u; r), on small nonlinear scales, r, is derived from the Press{Schechter approach. The isothermal assumption means that the circular velocity...
متن کاملProbability density functions of turbulent velocity and temperature in the atmospheric surface layer
The probability density functions (pdf’s) for the longitudinal and vertical velocities, temperature, their derivatives, and momentum and sensible heat fluxes were measured in the atmospheric surface layer for a wide range of atmospheric stability conditions. The measured pdf’s for both the velocity and the temperature fluctuations are near-Gaussian and consistent with corresponding laboratory m...
